TYRONE LADEN ULSTER WIN INTER PRO
Sunday 22.01.2017
Inspired by eleven Tyrone girls Ulster won the All Ireland Post Primary Schools tournament at the weekend with a 2-7 to 1-1 victory over Connacht in the final at Kinnegad. Connacht had been seeking a hat trick of titles but faced a fired up Ulster who dominated proceedings from the start.
In the round robin stages Ulster first faced Leinster in a game that saw a hatrick from Louise Kerley ease them to a 5-3 to 2-5 victory. In their next outing Ulster defeated Connacht 1-7 to 1-2 with the goal coming from Laoise Duffy. Orla Prenter also chipped in with three points however the foundation for victory was the solid defence in which Cait Towe, Tyrone’s Meabh Corrigan, Emily Falloon and Aisling Callan were particularly outstanding. That victory ensured a place in the cup final so for the final game against Munster Ulster emptied their bench ensuring every member of the squad got at least a full game.
Despite goals from Edendork’s Maeve Maxwell and Danielle Mc Devitt Ulster lost by the narrowest of margins, 2-4 to 2-3.
In the final Ulster had the better start and points from St Ciaran’s student Maria Canavan (2) and Laoise Duffy helped them to a three point to no score lead. Connacht did finish the half with a flurry however stout defending ensured the Ulster girls went in at the break 0-3 to 0-1 in front.
Early in the second half Maria Canavan and Orla Prenter extended the lead before Canavan converted a penalty that put Ulster very much in the driving seat before Prenter added another goal.
Ulster continued to dominate with Captain Ciara Finnegan and her midfield partner Michelle Magee constantly driving at the heart of the Connacht defence resulting in further points followed from Elisha Donnelly and Prenter. The girls from the west managed to land a very late goal but it was mere consolation as a classy Ulster outfit deservedly won by nine points.
Ciara Finnegan accepted the cup on behalf of her province and Tyrone’s Meabh Corrigan from St. Ciaran’s Ballygawley was named player of the tournament. It has been a busy few days for the young Tyrone defender who also produced an outstanding display against Loreto Cavan on Thursday in the Ulster championship semi-final as St Ciaran’s booked their place in the decider.
