TG4 Ladies all Ireland Intermediate Championship Quarter Final
Tyrone 4-16 Leitrim 1-10
Niamh O’Neill scored 2-7 as Tyrone eased through to the all Ireland semi-final meeting with Sligo on the back of a fifteen point win over Leitrim at Carrick on Shannon on Sunday. Grainne Rafferty and Gemma Begley were also among the goals as Gerry Moane’s side turned in an excellent display.

Leitrim had caused Tyrone some problems early on, Aine Tighe hit a post with their first raid forward while Shannon Lynch made two outstanding saves as the veteran midfielder was held scoreless with the Tyrone defence turning in a disciplined display.

Tyrone appeared rusty early on as a seven week competitive lay off seemed to have taken its toll. However once the Red Hands got going the Connacht side could not live with the pace and clinical edge the Ulster champions brought to the game.
Five points up by the break though Tyrone looked well placed with O’Neills first goal coming eight minutes in. Several players were involved in working the ball out of defence before the Sperrin Og player produced a superb finish. Leitrim were quick to respond though and Michelle Heslin hit their third point with Deidre Ward catching Lynch out as a looping shot finished up in the net. Tyrone settled more and more after that set back before Grainne Rafferty’s goal left them three points to the good.
Letrim were quick out of the blocks after the restart and closed the gap to two but that was as close as they got. Tyrone upped the tempo and pulled away with little resistance. O’Neill continued to use the ball well and Moane’s side knocked over some well taken points. Veteran Gemma Begley finished a fine chance to the net on the fortieth minute and O’Neill herself added a fourth goal as the home team had no answer to the power and pace of their attack spearheaded by O’Neill, Rafferty and Begley. The quality of the defending produced by Neamh Woods, Joanne Barrett, Caoilean Conway, Christiane Hunter, Emma Brennan and Emma Louise Mulgrew left Leitrim with little change too.
Tyrone threw off the shackles in the latter stages, emptied the bench but they maintained their stranglehold to win by fifteen points on the back of a powerhouse display.
