Tyrone Ladies Junior Championship Final
Thursday 29.08.2013
North Tyrone neighbours Aghyaran and Mna Na Deirge went head to head in the Tyrone Junior Championship final played last Saturday evening at Sigersons Park in Strabane.
Aghyaran began the game strongly and were soon two points in front with Nicola and Lucy Mc Menamin driving their team forward.
Aghyaran continued to dominate the play but found scoring difficult as a result of good defensive work from the Derg and shooting several times into goalkeeper Leah Lynch’s hands.
Stacey Dolan, Phenah O’Neil and Kellie Meehan were coming more into the game and in spite of good play from Clodagh Catterson and Shannon Lynch the Derg girls were struggling to convert chances. A couple of good saves by Cathy Gallen in the Aghyaran goals kept her side on top before a quick break from defence resulted in an Amy Coyle point to put her side four in front with 24 minutes on the clock.
With half time approaching Kellie Meehan hit point number 5 before Lucy Mc Menamin got the score of the game for Aghyaran to leave her side 0-6 to no score ahead at the break.
Shannon Lynch opened the Derg’s account with the first score of the second half before Amy Coyle restored the six point differential. A point from a Laura Mc Sorley free left five between them but Mna Na Deirge needed a goal to get back into the game but could not find a breakthrough in spite of their best efforts.
Aghyaran remained on top and Shannon Lynch extended the lead as the game entered the last quarter. A further free from Nicola Mc Menamin and a point each from Amy Coyle and Louise O’Carolan sealed the win and although Laura Mc Sorley added another score for Mna Na Deirge Agyharan were not to be denied as they eased to a 0-12 to 0-3 win. The St Davog’s girls can now look forward to an Ulster championship meeting at home to Donegal champions Gweedore.
