Kildare 2-12
Tyrone 4-8
Gemma Begley called on all her years of experience as she kept her cool to slot home an injury time penalty and secure a second league win on the bounce for Tyrone at Newbridge against a Kildare side that had led by a point and looked on course to grab the three points deep into injury time.
Tyrone never gave in and carved out several openings in the closing stages with one of those chances producing the opportunity for Begley. A high ball directed to Niamh O’Neill caused problems for the Lilywhites defence and they conceded the spot kick which Begley slotted with confidence. That match winning score took her tally for the afternoon to 4-1 in a hugely entertaining encounter played at championship pace.
Tyrone led by a point at the break with Begley hitting the first of her four goals just before half time to give Tyrone a 1-4 to 0-6 lead. The half was punctuated by some excellent scores and passages of play although Christiane Hunter and Emma Smyth both picked up knocks.
Kildare were quickest out of the blocks in the second half pulling back a goal to go ahead before a long range effort from Begley dropped into the Kildare goal to edge the visitors back into the driving seat against the all Ireland champions.
A converted penalty by Begley after Rebecca McCrory was fouled extended Tyrone’s lead before Kildare clawed themselves back into the game converting a penalty of their own. It all made for a tense climax with the veteran Carrickmore player sealing the win to leave Tyrone with the perfect start to their division two campaign.
Tyrone Scorers: Gemma Begley 4-01, Niamh Hughes 0-02, Grainne Rafferty 0-02, Emma Jane Girvan, Rebecca Mc Crory, Niamh O’Neill 0-01 each
