Tyrone Ladies Red Hand Rumble last Saturday night at the Glenavon Hotel Cookstown turned out to be a massive success! With a full house of very partisan spectators some great fights, plenty of craic and a fantastic atmosphere it was a night that will live long in the memory. Every fight was memorable with the participants going above and beyond the call of duty in their attempts to get the judges’ vote.

Mickey Doran and Brian Cassidy was probably the fight of the night and after three high quality rounds Mickey just about won a very close contest. Peter Mc Gahan and Daniel McElroy, the only 2 “real” boxers put on a great exhibition fight – a no decision contest but the real battle of the heavy weights.

Two of Tyrone’s top referees Stephen McNamee and Eugene McConnell entertained the crowd in an exciting contest but Stevie’s experience and size advantage proved decisive as he secured the victory. Mickey Murphy and Cathal Magill played out a hard fought draw while Michael Mitchell and Stephen “Archie” Beattie served up a cracking contest – real aggression and plenty of big hits early on in the night. Michael took the victory and also took the Boxer of the Night trophy home with him!

In three other contests Thomas Sheridan beat Raemie Gourley, Aidan Kelly beat Rory McCann.
And Peter McGoldrick and Eoin Bradley fought out a draw.

In the bout between Charlene Murphy and Maggie Farrelly (who entered the ring with 2 umpires for corner men!) the decision went to Murphy. However Maggie deserves great credit having earlier that day completed the national referees fitness test. She also had the small matter of a club league game at 11:00 am on Sunday morning to worry about so massive credit to her for the effort.

Other results saw Sean O’Hagan beat Kieran Eannetta and Eoin Quinn beat Paddy Roche in a great wee fight where Paddy just came up short after a late surge. Niall O’Hagan got the decision over Ciaran Hagan and Shane Mulgrew put on a great display after injuring his ankle on Saturday evening to draw with Seamus Donnelly.

County Chairman Ciaran McLaughlin, who rushed up the road from the Tyrone v Offaly game and John Lynch was the final fight of the night. It was also a great effort by John coming directly from a championship match in Donegal with a team he was involved with. This was a no decision contest as the golden oldies enjoyed their time ducking and diving about the ring, much to the crowd’s amusement.

£850 was raised in the raffle in aid of Aware Defeat Depression, our charity partners to complete what was a superb night of entertainment for all who were lucky enough to be there.
As it would be much too difficult to single out all those who deserve thanks the ladies committee would like it known that they are deeply indebted and appreciative of all those who helped in any way to make this the night it was. Now it is about turning their attention to an Ulster Final clash with Monaghan on the 14th of July.
