Tyrone travelled to Clones on Sunday afternoon to face Wicklow in the first of their round robin fixtures winning comfortably on a final score of 5-18 to 2-6.

The Ulster Champions began well and after Grainne Rafferty found the net three minutes into the first half it looked as if Gerry Moane’s side would cruise to victory.

Wicklow however responded strongly to that setback and began creating chances of their own. Jackie Kinch took advantage of a defensive lapse in the Tyrone rearguard to find the net with Maedbh Deeney tagging on a point a minute later.

It looked like the Red Hands were in for a real challenge as the Wicklow girls grew in confidence. Tyrone however settled to the task and led by the hard working Neamh Woods and Emma Jane Gervin they continued to create chances. Grainne Rafferty was causing havoc in the Wicklow rearguard while Slaine Mc Carroll and Niamh Mc Girr ensured that further chances for the Wicklow girls were kept to a minimum.

Tyrone finished the first half strongly with 2-4 in the closing ten minutes to effectively seal the win. Niamh Mc Girr(1), Niamh O’Neill (1), Emma Jane Gervin (1) and Emma Brennan landed points while Rafferty and Mc Caffrey both found the net to put Tyrone in a very strong position at the break.

Wicklow struggled to create chances in the second half as Gerry Moane’s side found their rhythm. Gemma Begley hit the net as did Chloe Mc Caffrey during a very dominant second period. With the win secured the manager ran the bench giving game time to Christiane Hunter, Emma Hegarty, Caoileann Conway, Aisling O’Kane and Emma Smyth.

In spite of being out-played for the entire second half Wicklow continued to battle hard and were rewarded when corner forward Rose Fagan found the net a couple of minutes before the final whistle. However Tyrone were never in danger and were not to be denied a win. They sealed the result and the points with late scores from Chloe Mc Caffrey and Gemma Begley.

Next up for Tyrone is a trip to Mullahoran for a clash with Offaly. That game is scheduled for the 28th of July.

Scorers: Grainne Rafferty 2-3, Chloe Mc Caffrey 2-2, Gemma Begley 1-3, Aine Canavan 0-1, Niamh Mc Girr 0-2, Niamh O’Neill 0-4, Neamh Woods 0-1, Emma Jane Gervin 0-1, Emma Brennan 0-1.
