Tyrone travelled to Kingspan Breffni Park on Friday night for the opening game of their All Ireland group series but found Armagh too hot to handle as the Orchard County recorded a 6-16 to 3-13 win. Armagh’s greater physical strength and ability to create and take scores proved the key differences as Gerry Moane’s side came out second best after a high scoring and entertaining game.

The Red Hands began well enough with both Niamh O’Neill and Chloe Mc Caffrey looking sharp as they registered their team’s opening scores of the evening. Armagh responded with points from Mackin and Lavery as they reacted to Tyrone’s fast start.

Mc Caffrey and Grainne Rafferty landed points before the Macartans star hit the net to put Tyrone 1-4 to 0-2 ahead. However Armagh’s response was fast and ruthless. Goals from Aoife Mc Coy and Aimee Mackin either side of a point from Kelly Madden in the space of two minutes had Armagh two points clear.

Credit to Tyrone they continued to battle hard and three points without reply courtesy of O’Neill (2) and Mc Caffrey saw them lead 1-7 to 2-3 after eighteen minutes of the first half.

All that changed however when the Armagh centre forward Aoife Mc Coy hit her second goal of the game twenty minutes into the first half. Tyrone’s response was instant and direct. A superb Grainne Rafferty pass picked out Niamh O’Neill and the full forward converted confidently. Armagh were growing in confidence and causing problems for the Tyrone defence with their strong running and work rate. They began to flex their muscles and added two goals before the half time whistle with one each from Caroline O’Hanlon and Kelly Mallon to go in at the break leading 5-7 to 2-9. Tyrone’s last two scores of the half coming from Grainne Rafferty and Emma Brennan.

The opening ten minutes of the second half saw both sides add three points to their totals. Niamh O’Neill, Chloe Mc Caffrey and Grainne Rafferty were on target for Tyrone while player of the match Aimee Mackin (2) and Eve Lavery replied for the Orchard County.

Gerry Moane’s side tried hard to get back into the game but they found their opponents almost impossible to break down. Moane ran the bench with Emma Hegarty, Caitlin Kelly, Clara Munroe, Siobhan Sheerin and Aileen Touhey all entering the action. In spite of their best efforts however Armagh continued to boss the game and eased to victory in the end.

With twelve minutes of the second half remaining Aoife Mc Coy landed her third goal of the night to put her team ten clear. Niamh O’Neill added a third goal for Tyrone but once again Armagh responded with points from Marley, Mackin and O’Hanlon.
The game as a contest was over by the time a Caitlin Kelly score made it a an eleven point gap but Armagh deservedly had the final say with the closing point of the game from the outstanding Aimee Mackin.

Tyrone Scorers: Niamh O’Neill 2-4, Chloe Mc Caffrey 1-4, Grainne Rafferty 0-3, Emma Brennan 0-1, Caitlin Kelly 0-1

Final score: Tyrone 3-13, Armagh 6-16.
