Westmeath and Tyrone served up a very exciting and compelling All Ireland Intermediate Semi Final on Sunday that went all the way to extra time before the winners were eventually decided.

The Red Hands made the perfect start with a Sasha Byrne point straight from the throw in. Points from Cara Mc Crossan, Aoife Horisk and Slaine Mc Carroll had Tyrone four clear inside six minutes. However Westmeath settled to the task and within seven minutes were tied at 0-4 apiece.

Westmeath continued to play confidently and a score from Sarah Dillon had the midlanders two in front. Tyrone came close to going in at the break one up when Cara Mc Crossan brought out the best in the Westmeath keeper when through on goal. That fine save sent the teams off at the break with Tyrone trailing 0-6 to 0-4.

The second half saw Tyrone start positively and within five minutes the Red Hands were four clear. Scores from Niamh O’Neill, Aoife Horisk and Sorcha Gormley put Tyrone in a strong position five minutes into the second half.

Just when Tyrone supporters began to think positively back came Westmeath. Points from Sarah and Tracey Dillon, a goal from Anna Jones followed by a further point and a converted penalty left Tyrone three behind with forty three minutes played. Niamh O’Neill clipped over a point just after Sorcha Gormley had a penalty saved. Anna Jones hit the net for Westmeath as the game entered the final ten minutes to leave it 3-9 to 1-10.

Niamh O’Neill struck for a goal to leave two points between the sides before a goal from Caoimhe Murray and another Westmeath point left it 4-10 to 2-10 with three minutes remaining.

The game looked to be slipping away from Tyrone but from somewhere they managed to salvage a draw with scores from Niamh O’Neill and Aoife Horisk to  level the game Tyrone 3-13 Westmeath 4-10.

Extra time saw two tired teams battle it out for a place in the final. Tyrone opened the scoring with a Chloe Mc Caffrey point before Westmeath went ahead following two points from the boot of Sarah Dillon. Tyrone drew level following another Chloe Mc Caffrey point and it would now all come down to the final period of extra time.

Aoife Horisk opened the second half scoring two minutes in and Tyrone went further ahead when Sorcha Gormley fired to the net. Westmeath reduced the gap to two and pushed hard to get the scores that would take it to penalties. A converted free from Aoife Horisk put three between the teams and despite their best efforts Westmeath could not get the goal they needed and tyrone made it through to the final on a score of 4-17 to 4-14.
