Tyrone 4-14 Antrim 2-8

Tyrone Ladies U16s bounced back from their defeat to Donegal last week to overcome a stubborn Antrim side in Dunmoyle on Saturday.

Immediately from the throw-in Tyrone looked sharp with Chloe McCafferty and Shannon Stevenson opening the scoring with a point each before Caitlin Kelly put the ball in the Antrim net. The Saffron girls responded with a goal from Emily Falloon to keep them in touch but two points from Kelly and one from Stevenson restored Tyrone’s lead. The very impressive Antrim midfielder Falloon again cut through the Tyrone defence to drive the ball to the net.

Despite having enjoyed the majority of possession in the first twenty minutes with Roisin Devlin covering much ground as playmaker, Tyrone struggled to break away from a battling Antrim side. When Aoibheann McHugh picked up Falloon in the middle of the field she was able to immediately restrict the Antrim girl’s impact on the game. However, some wayward shooting by the Tyrone forwards in front of the posts ensured they did not extend their lead. Caitlin Kelly then provided Tyrone with a little cushion adding two majors to her personal tally. Antrim never gave up and racked up four points from play while Meabh McElroy with two points and one each from Shannon Stevenson and Chloe McCafferty sent Tyrone in at the break with an 8 point lead.

The second-half was a much more even affair as Antrim sought to get back into this contest. Two early points from the Saffrons signalled that they had not given up. Chloe McCafferty and Jessica Heany with a point each then restored the Red Hand lead. Heany added another two points before Antrim responded with two from play. As the game entered its closing stages Chloe McCafferty scored a wonderful individual goal and Shannon Stevenson got the last point of the day.

Tyrone managers Kevin Bogle and Brian McGinn will have been satisfied with this win and while acknowledging that there is still much improvement needed they will look forward to the remainder of the Ulster Championship.
