Tyrone Lads To The Fore In Freshers’ Match
Wednesday 19.10.2011

One of the keenest rivalries in third level football involves matches between Queens University Belfast and St Mary’s College in the city. First up on the calendar is the match between the Freshers teams from each of the Universities and for young guys not used to the rivalry that exists between the two seats of learning this can be quite an experience.
In today’s game It was Queens who made the better start and led by six points at half time 2-04 to 0-04. However The Falls Road lads produced quite a second half comeback to not only overhaul that deficit but to eventually win the match by three points holding their opponents scoreless for the whole second half into the bargain on a score 0-13 to 2-04. Among the Tyrone students involved with the St Mary’s side were Darragh Mc Anenly, Eoin Mc Caffrey, Conor Clarke, Padraig Slane,Danny Mc Elhatton, Niall Ward, Cillian Barkley and Omagh St Endas player Aaron Grugan a second half substitute for St Marys who was playing his first competitive match in over two years. Aaron had been told that a knee injury he was suffering from was so serious he would never play football again but through a combination of good rehab and hard work he is now back playing.
Former county minors Harry Og Conlon and Caolan Daly were on the defeated Queens team.
