The home side began the second half well with three unanswered points inside the opening four minutes to draw level with their more illustrious opponents. The teams swapped scores once again and after ten minutes of the second half were tied at 0-10 apiece.

Three minutes later and the favourites got the score they needed to take a grip on the game. A Gerard Bradley goal was followed quickly by three Ruairi Convery frees and Derry kept their opponents at arm’s length for the remainder of the game.

Tyrone did hit the net after great work from Sean Og Grogan with six minutes remaining. However it was Derry that finished strongest with two further Convery points to seal the win. Special mention to Tyrone goalkeeper Conor Mc Elhatton who made a brilliant penalty save from Convery to keep his team in the game as the clock ticked towards added time.

Mattie Lennon’s side may have lost but they will have gained considerable experience from their clash with the 2017 Ulster Senior Hurling Shield winners.

Tyrone may have lost 1-17 to 1-12 to Derry in the Ulster Hurling Shield final but they will take quite a bit of confidence following their display at Pairc Eire Og on Sunday afternoon.

Derry played with the aid of a very strong breeze in the first half but were made battle all the way by a determined and well organised Tyrone team. With Aidan Kelly sitting deep and Damien Casey showing unerring accuracy from placed balls the Red Hands reached the break trailing 0-9 to 0-6. Ruairi Convery hit six of Derry’s first half points including one fantastic sideline cut but the Oak Leafers went in at the break knowing they were in a battle.
