Tyrone’s hopes of a third All Ireland minor title in six years ended at Croke Park on Sunday afternoon when they lost out by three points to prematch favourites Mayo, 2-13 to 1-13. The Red Hands were the better side early on with midfielder Ronan Nugent clipping over two superb points and Lee Brennan and David Mulgrew also on target. Mayo though got a goal against the run of play from Tommy Conroy and that enabled them to lead 1-4 to 0-6 at the break.

Within eight minutes of the restart Mayo had stretched their advantage to eight points courtesy of points from Conor Loftus and Conroy and a goal from Darragh Doherty. To their credit Tyrone fought back with points from Brennan, Daire Gallagher and substitute duo Philip Donnelly and Cathal McShane while Conor McKenna got an injury time goal to bring his personal haul to 1-2 but their efforts just came up short.
