Roscommon 3-11 Tyrone 1-12

Tyrone’s Division one league campaign got off to a disappointing start at Doctor Hyde Park on Sunday afternoon when they were beaten by five points by Roscommon.

It was a game that the Red Hands looked to be in control off as they turned a three point interval deficit into a three point lead early in the second half with the wind at their backs. At that stage they had another good goal chance which if they had taken it would probably have ended the game as a contest. Instead Roscommon got a lot of energy from the miss and two goals in as many minutes turned the game on its head. Tyrone then lost Cormac Munroe to a black card in the last quarter and when they were pushing for a goal to try and win the game they got caught out on the counter attack with Roscommon getting their third major of the afternoon to end the game.

Ben O’Carroll kicked the opening two points of the game before Peter Harte opened Tyrone’s account from a free. Kieran McGeary and Diarmuid Murtagh traded quality points before wing half back Niall Devlin marked his league debut with a fine point as well to leave the visitors only trailing 0-4 to 0-3 with twenty minutes played. Tyrone would have been happy with the way that things were going at this stage as they were playing against a stiff breeze but then Roscommon kicked the next four scores from Daire Cregg, Brian Stack, Niall Daly and Conor Cox. All of a sudden Tyrone were five behind but they finished the half strongly with good scores from David Mulgrew and Darragh Canavan to only trail 0-8 to 0-5.

Darren McCurry was sprung from the bench for the second half and he had an immediate impact converting a free and hitting a superb point from play. Keeper Niall Morgan then levelled matters from a long range free before Cox edged Roscommon back in front. In the 46th minute Kieran McGeary got on the end of a long range Morgan free to flick the ball to the net and moments later they should have had a second goal when they carved open the Roscommon defence but McCurry slipped when through.

It proved to be a turning point in the game as Roscommon fired in goals from Ciaran and Diarmuid Murtagh in a three minute spell to take control. Tyrone lost defender Cormac Munroe to a black card and deep into injury time when the visitors were pressing for a winning goal they got overturned for Roscommon to come down the field for Ben O’Carroll to find the net to finish the contest.
