Tyrone were taken to extra time by a determined Derry side before a Dervla Farley inspired second half push saw them home by ten points at Celtic Park.
The game was played at am unusually lack lustre pace for much of the hour and only really sparked into life before and during extra time.
Despite leading for much of the match it took a late equalising point to from Derry’s Molly Mc Closkey to send the game into extra time.
Tyrone made a fast start with a Clodagh Munroe goal and points from Farley and Shauna Mc Gurren. Derry settled and were soon back in the game with scores from Dara Mc Keever and Caoimhe Mc Nally adding 1-1 before the first water-break while Mc Gurren and Farley struck late first half scores for the Red Hands.
Orla Mc Geough and Mc Keever pointed after the break to push Derry in front before Lucy Conroy replied for Tyrone. Derry now had momentum and Orlagh O’Kane and Mc Geough added to their team’s tally.
Caitlin Gormley came off the bench for the visitors in an attempt to seize the initiative and immediately knocked over a point. Tyrone missed a penalty but points from Emma Loane, Ellie Jane Quinn and Farley looked to have won it for Tyrone. To their credit Derry battled on and a late point from Molly Mc Closkey took the game to extra time.
Derry continued to play well after the restart and deservedly went in at the break leading by two. Tyrone began the second half of extra time with purpose and Clodagh Munroe found the net from the right after good work from Loane. From then until the end Tyrone ran at Derry with Farley bagging 1-3 and the impressive Gormley 1-1 through the second period as Tyrone eventually eased to victory.
