Ulster Ladies Minor Championship April 11th, 2015

Tyrone 8-12 Antrim 1-3

Tyrone Ladies Minors made it two wins out of two with an impressive win over Antrim at Dunmoyle on Saturday afternoon.

Playing into a stiff wind in the first half the Red Hand girls settled early and Ellen McGowan sent over the first point from play. Dearbhalá McDonald added another score before McGowan again slotted over the bar to give Tyrone a three point lead.

The Red Hand girls were dominating possession but struggled against the strong breeze to convert this advantage to scores. Chloe Corr finally penetrated the Antrim back line to score the first goal of the game after 12 minutes. Antrim did make attempts to threaten the Tyrone defence but were forced to shoot from distance time after time and were limited to two scores from free kicks in the opening period. Ellen McGowan continued her impressive form in the Tyrone shirt scoring her first goal of the day and a point from play and Sinead Donnelly added a point following a surging run from the half-back line sending Tyrone in at the break with a deserved 10 point lead.

Ellen McGowan started the second-half where she left off in the first with a fantastic goal skilfully slipped underneath the oncoming Antrim goalkeeper.  Dearbhalá McDonald then added two points either side of a McGowan point. The next ten minutes saw the Red Hand Girls go on a goal rampage with majors from McDonald, Emma Brennan, a brace from McGowan and, what surely was the score of the a match, a superb individual goal from Aimee Coyle.

Antrim continued to battle hard but a fantastic defensive display thwarted any attempt to work the ball into a scoring position.  Substitute Meabh MacRory contributed two points and Eva McCaul completed Tyrone’s scoring for the day. Just when it seemed like the Saffrons were going to be held scoreless in the second period, as the clock counted down they scored a consolation goal and a point.

This was another huge performance from the Tyrone girls and the team’s management Martin Conway and Desi Friel highlighted the team’s effort on the day. Following the match Conway stated “We are delighted with the team performance today. Despite our huge score there was a massive defensive effort which thwarted Antrim throughout the game. We will build on this and look forward to the next game against Down in Galbally in a couple of weeks”.
