Tyrone Minors opened their Ulster Championship campaign with a win over a much fancied Donegal team in Fintona on Sunday afternoon. Despite having to play the game with eight players who had played in schools All-Ireland semi-finals the day before the Red Hand girls started the brightest and went into a 6 point to zero lead with scores from Siobhan Sheerin (0-2), Meabh Mallon, Melissa McCann, Emma… Smith and Niamh O’Neill. Donegal responded with a goal and a point to keep themselves in the game. Emma Smith and Shannon Monaghan both added a brace of points for Tyrone to extend their lead while Donegal recorded one more point before the half-time whistle.

Grainne Rafferty opened the scoring for Tyrone in the second period but the previous day’s games were now starting to show as the Red Hand legs tired and Donegal set about reducing the lead and scored three points without reply to reduce Tyrone’s lead to three with 15 minutes to play. Shannon Monaghan and Meabh McGleenan edged Tyrone’s advantage to 5 points before Donegal scored a goal to leave the gap at only 2 points with 5 minutes to go. Siobhan Sheerin returning to the field after a sin bin struck a free over the bar and then Shannon Monaghan scored a delightful point to close out the game for the Red Hand girls.
