Tyrone minors claimed their 26th Ulster Minor title on Sunday with a 2-11 to 1-8 win over a talented Cavan side who gave it there all throughout and in fact led at the break 1-7 to 0-8. This came about for the Breffni men having trailed at one stage in the opening half 0-6 to 0-2.

Tyrone began well and raced into a 0-4 to no score lead after eight minutes as Cavan took a while to settle. Points from James Mulgrew, Thomas Meenan, Peter Colton and Eoin Long gave the young Red Hands the sort of start to the contest that they wanted. Cavan eventually began to settle and points from the impressive Faolan Graham and Jake Brady gave them hope.

Tyrone made it a four point game again with scores from Colton and Long but a superb two pointer from the boot of wing half back John Donohue ignited the large Cavan crowd who began to make their voices heard.

Team captain Padraig Donaghy and Cavan full forward Nathan Quigley swapped points before another two pointer from Graham tied the scores at 0-9 apiece.

Cavan were relishing the exchanges and with half time rapidly approaching they responded to James Mulgrew’s second point with a goal from Mark Reilly just before the half time whistle which sent them off at the break leading 1-7 to 0-8.

Tyrone looked somewhat perplexed as they left the field behind by two in despite playing some excellent football in the opening half.

The Red Hands were out early for the second half. Whether that was a statement of intent or not we might never know but on thing for certain was that they held Cavan to a single point in the second half and finished up deserving 2-11 to 1-8 winners.

After five minutes of sustained pressure Tyrone’s Cathal Farley found the net and Tyrone were ahead. Quigley found space inside the Tyrone defence and fired over to tie the game at 1-8 apiece.

From there until the end Gerard Donnelly’s side controlled the game A fabulous individual effort from the mercurial Joel Kerr made it 2-8 to 1-8 with clear daylight between the teams.

The Tyrone forward unit and midfield pairing performed well during the final quarter but the workrate and tenacity of the Tyrone defence matched them step for step.

Tyrone added a point from Eoin Long before player of the match Joel Kerr completed the scoring with a brace of points to seal the win.

Final Score: Tyrone 2-11, Cavan 1-8
