Tyrone 1-21 1-12 Cork

Ulster champions Tyrone successfully negotiated their All Ireland quarter final against Cork, in O’Moore Park Portlaoise. Once again, a rapid start ensured Tyrone would lead from the outset and were never headed.

Tyrone, using wind advantage, took the lead through a James Mulgrew two pointer from play in the third minute. In the next attack, Cathal Farley claimed Tyrone’s goal, Thomas Meenan’s shot was saved by Rory Twohig, the Beragh man quickest to react to the rebound.

By the tenth minute, the lead had stretched to eight with Peter Colton, Eoin Long, and Farley all on target. However, Tyrone did withstand a scare when Darragh Flynn sliced through the defence but shot narrowly wide.

By the 20th minute, Tyrone had increased their tally to 1-9 with half backs  Aodhan Quinn and Thomas Meenan on the scoresheet. Cork’s  reply was two frees and a good point from Luke O’Mahony.

The Rebels began to claw their way back into the contest largely through the efforts of Ben Corkery Delaney, nephew of former Cork star Colm. The full forward fisted a point as Tyrone failed to clear their lines then kicked a point before winning a long delivery to fire to the net in a four minute spell. Remarkably, despite Tyrone’s dominance, the lead was just three.

Crucially, Peter Colton kicked a two pointer to settle his side in the following attack. Further points from Meenan and Farley saw Tyrone lead by six at the break.

A composed second half performance saw Joel Kerr converting a 45, to extend the lead. A 39th minute two pointer from Corkery Delaney to close the deficit to four was as good as it got for the Rebels. Tyrone going through the gears to secure a nine point victory, points from Long, Kerr, Colton and substitute Pearse McDonald.

Once again, Elliott Kerr, Aodhan Quinn, and Ciaran McCrystal were excellent in defence with Eoin Long top scoring with 0-6, Cathal Farley 1-2 & Peter Colton 0-5.

All eyes will be on Breffni tonight as Tyrone awaits the winner of Connacht champions Roscommon and Louth, in the semi-final.
