Tyrone travelled to Newbridge in search of two points against Kildare this afternoon but their hopes of victory suffered an early blow when full back Conor Gormley was forced to withdraw from the starting fifteen with an injury. His place at number three was taken by under twenty one player Conor Clarke. With a strong breeze blowing right to left across the Newbridge ground Tyrone played with the elements in the opening thirty five minutes. It was a decision that ultimately had a major bearing on the outcome of the game.
The Red Hands took a while to settle but with Stevie O’Neill, Sean Cavanagh and Joe Mc Mahon providing the leadership they frustrated the home side with some superb play. O’Neill landed three super points while goalkeeper Niall Morgan also chipped in with two fine frees. A Mark Donnelly goal created and finished by himself in the eighth minute provided Tyrone with a crucial platform that enabled them to reach the break 1-8 to 0-3 ahead.
Kildare improved considerably after the break and created four great chances of points that were all spurned in the opening period of the half. A steadying score from Peter Harte put Tyrone back on course and although Kildare struck over some fine second half scores they were unable to mark serious inroads into the Tyrone lead. The Red Hands came close to hitting the net on a few occasions but were not to be denied on a day that saw them record their fifth win of the campaign and seal their spot in the semi finals. Final score Kildare 0-10, Tyrone 1-13.
