Tyrone Senior Hurlers qualified for the semi final of the Nicky Rackard Cup following the results in the last pair of sectional games.

Mattie Lennon’s team did what was required of them and defeated Louth in their game 2-21 to 1-17. They then had to wait for the result of the Sligo v Mayo game before their fate was decided. A draw between the western rivals meant it would be Tyrone and Sligo who would progress to the last four.

The Red Hands played into the breeze in the first half but created numerous opportunities. Points from Tiernan Morgan, Damian Casey and Lorcan Devlin helped Tyrone settle early but Louth free taker Darren Geoghgan’s accuracy kept his team in touch.

Casey hit the net and Tyrone added five points to ease eight clear. Louth began to find their rhythm and by half time the Red Hands led 1-12 to 0-10.

The second half was nip and tuck as both sides enjoyed periods of dominance. Some excellent free taking by Geoghan helped keep Louth in the game but fine points from Casey, Morgan and Devlin helped keep Tyrone’s dreams alive. Matthew Mulgrew sent a screamer to the net to cancel out an earlier goal from full forward Seaghan Connolly.

Tyrone added late points from Morgan, Casey and Devlin to win by seven. The margin of victory was not important but the result from Sligo was greeted like a winning score and Tyrone made it through to next weekend’s semi final where they will face Armagh.
