Tyrone turned in a hugely impressive display to retain the McKenna Cup at the expense of Monaghan at the Athletic Grounds on Saturday evening. Paul Finlay and Conor McAliskey traded early points before Kieran Hughes found the net for Monaghan in the 12th minute. Another Finlay free put Monaghan further in front but as the rain poured down the Red Hands began to get on top.

Man of the match Stephen O’Neill fired over a brilliant point from distance before Peter Harte played the ball to Mark Donnelly who soccer styled it to the bottom right hand corner of the net. McAliskey and Plunkett Kane tagged on points before O’Neill blasted the ball to the net after Mark Donnelly’s initial shot had been saved by Monaghan keeper Mark Keogh. In the closing stages of the first half Monaghan defender Ronan McNally was straight red carded as Tyrone led 2-7 to 1-4 at the break.

Ronan McNamee increased the holders’ advantage on the restart before a superb O’Neill pass picked out Donnelly who calmly rounded Keogh to score his second goal of the night. Finlay, Owen Duffy and Darren Hughes all had Monaghan points but McAliskey, Sean Cavanagh and substitute Kevin Gallagher replied for Tyrone before Peter Harte put the icing on the cake when converting an injury time penalty after he had been fouled himself. Monaghan ended the game with thirteen men after Dessie Mone was dismissed for a second yellow card offence as it finished 4-11 to 1-10.
