The Corn na Og competition began this past week and Tyrone schools have made the perfect start as they bid to reach the quarter finals after Christmas. Omagh CBS took on St.Colmans Newry in their first outing and goals from Patrick O’Neill, Gavin Slane and Robbie McDaid helped them to an emphatic 5-14 to 2-9 victory at the Pearse Ogs ground in Armagh. On Thursday afternoon they made it two wins out of two when they got the better of St.Pius X Magherafelt at Greencastle.  Slane scored both goals with O’Neill, Padraig McGirr and Andrew McGrath featuring among the points. Next up is a clash with last season’s Dalton Cup winners St.Pats Cavan this coming week.

St.Patricks Academy Dungannon began their campaign on Friday with a hard fought 2-15 to 5-4 victory over Downpatrick at the Boucher Road playing fields in Belfast. The Tyrone lads played against a strong wind in the first half but they still led 1-5 to 1-2 at the break with Ross Lavery scoring 1-2 and Enda McGarrity [2] and Aidan Woods supplying points, John Lee outstanding in defence. Lavery, McGarrity and Peter Herron all tagged on points on the restart before McGarrity found the net as they scored 1-3 without reply. The Down lads though staged a superb fight back and four goals saw them take the lead going into the closing stages but Dungannon weren’t to be denied with  Corin Kelly, Cormac O’Hagan and Lavery all grabbing points to give them the win. Next week is a busy one for the Academy as they take on Abbey CBS at Sherrys Field in Armagh on Tuesday before facing St.Michaels Enniskillen two days later in Pomeroy.
