Dungannon Eoghain Ruadh 1-18 Naomh Colum Cille 0-6
Dungannon Eoghain Ruadh are through to yet another Benburb Cup title shootout after they emerged comfortable fifteen point winners over neighbouring Naomh Colum Cille in Saturday evenings semi-final, at O’Neill Park.
The Cille’s battled gamely, but despite the best efforts of Mike O’Gorman, Shea McKiver, John Connolly and Rory O’Neill, they found the Ruadh defence in uncompromising mood throughout. A highlight of the game was the amount of exceptional blocking by the winning defence with Paul Lavery, Stephen Donnelly and Josh Ferguson all executing superb skill when thwarting numbers attacks.
Conor McNally weighed in with two points from wing back on a night Tyrone Captain Damien Casey produced another master class of finishing. The Dungannon full forward finished with a 0-10 tally that included a sweetly struck 65, several frees and some stunning points from distance as their attacking edge proved to be the difference, at the finish.
McKiver had handed the Cille’s a first minute lead, but six Casey points helped Dungannon into a deserving 0-11 to 0-5 half time cushion and, even though NCC continued to make a fist of it they laboured in the final third of the pitch. John Connolly supplied their only second half score by which time the game was over as a contest.
Duibhir Marshall’s 43rd minute goal following great approach play from Phillip Barker established a 1-14 to 0-5 lead and with Martin Devlin and Ricky Kelly featuring on the scoring returns Dungannon booked a final date with old adversaries Carrickmore. The introduction of teenager Brannon Molloy as a second half sub highlighted the mix of youth and experience within the townsmen’s squad as they attempt to reclaim the blue ribbon of Tyrone club hurling. That decider will take place on Sunday 13th September while NCC will now focus on a return to the ulster Junior Championship arena in October.
