Tyrone Seniors Come Up Short In Castlebar
Sunday 16.02.2025
Mayo 0-12 Tyrone 0-10 in association with Sally’s.
Mayo collected their first points in Division one this season when they edged past Tyrone at McHale Park in a contest that never rose to any great heights.
Tyrone led by a point at the break and were two in front going into the last quarter but they were to score just once more as Mayo reeled them in to claim victory.
Tyrone led 0-5 to 0-4 at the end of a first half that was a slow burner. With both sides making a number of changes before the start play at times was disjointed. Mayo full forward Frank Irwin opened the scoring in the 3rd minute before Tyrone keeper Niall Morgan was called into action to save well from Cian McHale.
It was Morgan who levelled matters with a fine effort with the outside of the boot before Davitt Neary cut in from the left wing to split the posts. Tyrone were then penalised for not having three players up front and McHale knocked over the resulting free for a 0-3 to 0-1 lead by the 22nd minute.
Tyrone Captain Brian Kennedy then fired over from distance before Mayo lost Conor Reid to a black card in the 25th minute. Sixty seconds later the visitors were level thanks to a quality score from centre half back Michael McKernan from out on the right wing. Mayo midfielder Matthew Ruane scored from long range for what proved to be their last score of the half. The lively Mark Bradley took a pass from Ciaran Daly to point from an acute angle before he supplied the pass for Eoin McElholm to burst through for the last score of the half as Tyrone led for the first time.

Jordan Flynn opened the second half with a two pointer, the only one in the game, but McCurry levelled matters from a free after Mayo were penalised for not leaving three men back in defence. Morgan converted a free but Irwin levelled the game again after neatly stepping inside his marker.
Another McCurry free edged Tyrone back in front before Morgan collected a line ball from Bradley to disect the posts and leave it 0-9 to 0-7. Tyrone were looking good at this stage but then Mayo enjoyed a purple patch that yielded three unswerered points. Substitute duo Ryan O’Donoghue and Fergal Boland scored to leave it all square before Irwin clipped over his third of the afternoon.
Substitute Cathal McShane converted a free after he had been fouled himself in the 66th minute for what proved to be Tyrone’s last score of the contest. Morgan had a goal chance which was saved on the line by Eoin O’Donoghue in a major moment in the game. Mayo came straight down the field with Ryan O’Donoghue converting a free. In a frantic finish Tyrone lost Michael McKernan to a second yellow card before Aidan O’Shea teed up Boland for the insurance score.
