Tyrone are through to the quarter finals of the All Ireland series where they will face Ulster champions Monaghan next weekend. However the players and management know that they were made fight all the way by a resilient and well organised Meath team before eventually winning on a score line of 0-17 to 2-9.

The win was in no small way due to a superb display from midfielder Sean Cavanagh who not only top scored for his side but also produced a tremendous display of strong running and tough tackling. Cavanagh with five first half points helped his side recover from a slow start where they conceded a seventh minute goal before going in at the break leading 0-11 to 1-4. At that stage Tyrone looked well placed for victory but as happened last week against Kildare they allowed their opponents to boss the second half and were hanging on somewhat at the end. The concession of a soft penalty five minutes into the second period followed by two quick points put Meath in front on 51 minutes before Tyrone hit four in a row to re-establish control.

However Meath showed tremendous resilience and when Michael Newman converted a free in the 62nd minute there was only one between the teams again. The game was very much in the melting pot when man of the match Cavanagh converted his eighth point of the game with time running out to put Tyrone two in front again. That score proved vital in the end as Tyrone, down to fourteen men following a double yellow for Stevie O’Neill, hung on for the win. Indeed Newman came close with a late free to snatching the win for Meath only to be denied by a fine save from Pascal Mc Connell in the Tyrone goals.

So the Red Hands march on but this was a far from convincing win and with a confident and determined Monaghan lying in wait Tyrone know they will have to improve. Too many tackles were missed, passes went astray, balls spilled and break balls lost. The team cannot afford a repeat of this next week against a Monaghan team determined to build on their Ulster final success of last week.
