Tyrone Through To U20 All Ireland Final

Tyrone are back in the final of the All Ireland Under 20 football competition after a deserved win over a very competitive Kildare side at Kingspan Breffni Park on Wednesday evening. They laid the foundations for the win when they played against the wind in a very well controlled first half.

Jimmy Lynch hit an early two pointer for the Lily Whites inside the opening minutes but a brace of Adrian Mc Gurren points tied the game and from there until half time Paul Devlin’s side controlled the game. Tyrone looked composed in their play as they defended well and broke with purpose at every opportunity.

Points from Leo Hughes and player of the match Aodhan Quinn put Tyrone two clear before Shea Mc Dermott found space where there was none and fired to the net to help Tyrone to a  five point lead at the break 1-6 to 04.

Kildare came out fired up for the second half and set about reducing the deficit. Five points in a row against the wind rattled Tyrone as they struggled to cope with the intensity the Leinster champions were bringing to the game.

A turnover ball led to a two pointer for Conor O”Neill midway through the half before substitute Darragh Donaghy capitalised on a short kick out and fired to the net, That score was just what Tyrone needed as they moved 2-8 to 0-10 clear.

Kildare continued to push forward but the Tyrone defence stood strong and although Kildare came close to scoring the goal they needed to get back into the game  the Red Hands  saw the game out. Four games in a row without conceding a goal says a lot for how hard the Tyrone defence worked. Goalkeeper Oisin Watson had another fine night between the sticks with several fine stops and excellent kickouts.

Final Score: Tyrone 2-12, Kildare 0-13
