Tyrone made it back to back wins in the Nicky Rackard Cup competition with a 2-19 to 1-10 win over Monaghan this afternoon at Killyclogher while at the same time gained some element of revenge following their league play off defeat to the same opposition a few weeks back.
The Red Hands came into this game in confident mood after their impressive showing against Louth last weekend and within eight minutes were 1-3 to 0-1 in front following a blistering start. Conor Grogan got the first of his two goals in the sixth minute and from that Tyrone never looked back. They were quicker to the ball and carried a greater scoring threat up front with Mulgrew, Sean Og Grogan and Morgan all causing problems for the Monaghan defence. Defensively Tyrone made life difficult for the Monaghan forwards and star man Michael Mc Hugh just was not allowed to influence the game in the way he wanted to.
A second goal from Grogan on twenty one minutes meant the home side reached the break 2-9 to 1-7 in front but they knew they were facing the elements in the second half and it was going to take a massive effort if they were to win the game. Monaghan moved Sean Leonard to full forward for the second half and scored two early points from Mc Hugh. With the strong wind blowing in favour of the Farney County most of the large crowd were expecting a second half onslaught to follow those opening two scores. However it was Tyrone who hit the next seven points in a row as Martin Grogan and Stephen Donnelly effectively shut up shop at the back.
Such was the workrate of Tyrone defensively that they restricted Monaghan to only three scores in the entire second half. Tyrone made great use of the early ball and eased to a twelve point win. Damien Casey top scored for Tyrone with eight points while Conor and Sean Og Grogan contributed 2-5 between them. This win sees Tyrone qualify for the semi final of the competition.
