Tyrone U-21s Win Shamrock Cup
Sunday 22.02.2015
Tyrone held on to win the Cremartin Cup on a final score of 1-10 to 0-10 but Monaghan made them fight all the way in an entertaining and competitive final played in front of a large crowd at Cremartin. Indeed had the home side been more clinical in front of goals during the closing ten minutes of the match they could have run the winners even closer.
Playing against the strong breeze the Red Hands began well with Kieran Mc Geary, Michael Cassidy and Cathal Mc Shane prominent in an impressive opening thirty minutes. Indeed senior man Mc Shane struck three fine points as Tyrone reached the break 0-7 to 0-4 in front. Ruairi Sludden (0-1). Mark Bradley (0-2) and Lee Brennan were others to find the target for Fergal Logan’s side in an impressive opening period.
The second half saw the wind ease and conditions improve as Monaghan set about closing the gap. Fergal Mc Mahon hit the first two scores of the half but Tyrone settled to the task and Cathal Mc Shane’s fourth point of the day plus a goal and a point from Mark Bradley in the tenth minute put Tyrone in a very strong position.
Credit to Monaghan they continued to push for scores but opted to go for goals when points were there for the taking. A Sean Mc Kenna point with ten minutes remaining put Tyrone 1-10 to 0-7 ahead and most spectators there felt that was that. However Monaghan continued to push for scores adding three points in the closing eight minutes. Several excellent Monaghan goal chances were wasted as Rory Brennan, Rory Mullan, team captain Mc Geary ensured Tyrone held on to win this popular pre season competition.
