Tyrone U12/13 Handballers retained their All Ireland team title at the weekend in a thrilling and compelling series of games that went right to the wire.

The team of six players plays three sets of doubles with the scores added together to decide the winner and has to include at least 3 Under 12s. They defeated Kilkenny in the semi-final and then went on to beat Tipperary in the final.

In the game against Kilkenny  Pauric Mullan and Cormac Munroe won both their games as did Sean Kerr and Ciaran Cuddy to give Conor Loughran and Turlough Clarke an almost unassailable lead going into the last match. The Tyrone boys lost the first game heavily but then responded with a 15-0 win to seal their slot in the final 76 – 42

The final against Tipperary was a much closer affair with only 5 points separating two evenly matched teams In the opening match Pauric Mullan and Cormac Munroe struggled to make any impression and lost both their games on an overall score of 30-13 Sean Kerr and Ciaran Cuddy hit back strongly to win their first game 15-7 but then lost the 2nd 14-15 to leave Turlough Clarke and Conor Loughran trailing by 10 going into the deciding game. The Tyrone pair thankfully were up for the challenge and put in an excellent display to win their two games 15-8 15-7 to take the title on an overall score of 72 points to 67.

Saturday’s win was Tyrone’s third in the last four years and is a clear indication of the status that the county currently enjoys on the underage Handball scene.
