Tyrone U17s are through to the Ulster championship semi final after defeating Donegal 2-9 to 1-7 at Healy Park on Saturday afternoon. The five point winning margin flattered the out of sorts Red Hands but the most important thing is that they are through to the last four where they will face Down next weekend.

Wind assisted Donegal were the better side in the first half and where full value for their 0-5 to 0-3 interval advantage despite the fact that Tyrone hit seven wides to their opponents four. Fionn Gallagher and  Shane McDevitt put the visitors into an early two point lead before Darragh Canavan and Thomas Hoy levelled matters. Hoy was Tyrone’s best forward in he first half and he added another superb point but three McDevitt frees saw Donegal lead by two at the turnaround.

Substitute Joe Oguz reduced the deficit on the restart before Daniel Millar took a pass from Canavan to clinically finish to the bottom left hand corner of the net in the 5th minute. McDevitt and Millar exchanged points before a fine effort from Ethan Jordan put Tyrone 1-6 to 0-6 in front. In the 12th minute a McDevitt goal levelled matters but moments later Canavan gave Tyrone a lead that they were never to lose with a superb point after cutting in from the right wing.

Canavan and Danny Gallagher swapped points and it was still anybody’s game. Donegal though continued to play the ball across the field instead of having a go to try and get an equaliser. They were caught out in midfield when Oguz intercepted the ball and played it to Canavan who weighed in with an outstanding individual point after leaving five players in his wake. Two minutes into injury time Millar made sure of victory when he smashed the ball into the roof of the Donegal net.
