Tyrone 3-15 1-11 Armagh

A storming final quarter, which saw Tyrone outscore Armagh 3-4 to 0-1 helped guide the reigning All Ireland champions to a flattering ten point victory.

Armagh had led by the minimum at the interval. Early Armagh dominance saw them race to a 1-2 to 0-1 advantage after 10 minutes. John Joe Hughes opened the scoring before benefiting from Aaron O’Neill’s attempted point effort dropping short and Hughes bravely punched the ball to the net.

Conor O’Neill and Liam Og Mossey reduced the deficit but Conal McGeough and Aaron O’Neill, both who posed Tyrone problems all evening, reestablished the advantage by the end of the opening quarter. Tyrone began to gain a foothold and kicked five points in succession to take the lead by the 27th minute with their scores coming courtesy of a brace of points from Eoin McElholm and Ruairi McCullagh, with Matthew Quinn also on target. Armagh responded , and scores from Hughes gave the visitors the lead at the break.

McGeough opened the second half scoring but what was turning out to be a tight battle, McCullagh levelled it up within eight minutes of the restart.

A two pointer from Aaron O’Neill gave Armagh renewed hope, and their confidence grew further when Callum O’Neill extended the lead.

With twelve minutes remaining, Tyrone were facing elimination and needed a spark. Liam Og Mossey forced a sideline ball for Tyrone, which was moved forward.  Eoin Donaghy fed Conall Sheehy, who stepped left then right before picking his spot for a brilliant goal. The Armagh bench were incensed by the decision and after making their feelings too vocal, they conceded a free in front of the posts to put Tyrone in front.

A disastrous five minutes for Armagh was compounded when Aaron O’Neill picked up a black card.

Tyrone sensed blood and ruthlessly punished Armagh. Quick hands from Grimes and Donaghy fed McElholm, who expertly finished inside the post. In the next attack, the net rattled again. A fantastic defence splitting pass from McCullagh found Noah Grimes to fire home and confirm Tyrone’s place in the semi-final.

Deep into injury time, Armagh’s Shea McCann picked up a second yellow as they exited the competition after a great contest.

Tyrone will know a much improved effort will be required next Wednesday when they travel to Owenbeg to face the unbeaten Derry in the semi final.
