Tyrone 1-23 Sligo 1-10

Tyrone Under 20s travelled down to Mohill in Leitrim on Saturday for the final of the Philly McGuinness Cup and produced a superb team display to see off the challenge of Sligo before winning 1-23 to 1-10.

The Red Hands showed five changes from their selected starting fifteen with Oran Grimes, Damian Mc Guigan, Liam Gray, Cathaoir Gallagher and Peter Óg Mc Cartan coming in.

Paul Devlin’s side were irrepressible in their display and opened up a four point lead with scores from Mc Cartan, Gray, Joe Oguz and Tiarnan Quinn . Sean Óg Mc Aleer was next to score when he fired to the net and with less than twenty minutes on the clock Tyrone led 1-8 to 0-2.

Sligo were struggling to break through the Tyrone defence but a strong, skilful run from team captain Rory Mc Hugh resulted in a superb goal. Points from Mc Hugh, Gavin Gorman and Alan Reilly reduced the deficit to five points as the first half entered additional time. It was then that Tyrone showed their true worth as they struck four superb scores from play courtesy of Mc Aleer (2), Gallagher and team captain Ruairi Gormley. That left the score at half time Tyrone 1-14, Sligo 1-5.

 

The Yeats County were playing wind assisted in the second half but Tyrone’s intensity in the tackle and ability to turn defence into attack with pace and accuracy meant the result was never in doubt. Mc Cartan, Mc Aleer, Quinn and substitute Matthew Murnaghan all added points as Tyrone eased to a 1-23 to 1-10 win and claimed the Phillip Mc Guinness trophy.
