Tyrone’s Unbeaten Record Goes.

Tyrone were brought down to earth with a bang this afternoon following a six point defeat to a very well drilled Cork team at Healy Park. Mickey Harte made five changes from the team that beat Donegal last week and although the new full forward line of Coney, O’Neill and O’Neill all got on the scoreboard the Red Hands struggled to cope with Cork’s physicality and ability to win break ball. The Rebels bossed the midfield exchanges and stuck rigidly to their defensive game plan for the entire seventy plus minutes. Even when playing with the wind Cork refused to commit players forward but they still managed to reach the break leading by four. They were hungrier, sharper and quicker to the ball and made much more effective use of possession. In contrast Tyrone struggled to win break ball and took the wrong option far too often when in possession giving the ball away aimlessly on far too many occasions. Aidan Walsh and Graham Canty provided a great platform for Cork and with Colm O’Neill and Paul Kerrigan in sublime form Tyrone found the Leesiders too hot to handle.
This afternoon was a reality check for Tyrone following the excitement of the win over Donegal. They are still in a reasonable position in terms of Division One but if they are hoping to make a serious impact in the championship they will have to devise a system that will allow them to break down defensive styles like Cork’s. The men in red were deserving winners on a final scoreline of 0-14 to 0-8.
