Tyrone 4-13 Derry 1-10

Tyrone U20s kept their best performance in the Ulster championship until the final as they completely eclipsed holders and prematch favourites Derry with a superb display of attacking football at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh on Sunday afternoon.

The winners trailed by four points at one stage in the first half but a blistering second quarter saw them outscore their opponents 2-6 to 0-1 and when they got a third goal in the first attack of the second half it was all over bar the shouting.

The holders kicked the opening three points of the game with full forward Mark McGrogan getting two of them before Tyrone replied through Conall Grimes and Sean Og McAleer.

A brilliant goal from Tiarnan McHugh then appeared to put Derry in control but that’s when Tyrone upped the tempo. The outstanding Darragh Canavan hit two brilliant points as well as providing the pass for Grimes to win a penalty which James Garrity converted.

It was all Tyrone at this stage and in the last attack of the first half McAleer first timed the ball to the net after Derry keeper Oran Hartin had denied Joe Oguz.

Midfielder Oguz though wasn’t to be denied only sixteen seconds into the second half when he collected a pass from McAleer to finish to the net. Ben McCarron had a Derry point but in the 36th minute Tyrone found the net again when defenders Grimes and Conor Quinn combined for the latter to finish in style.

Conleth McShane blasted over a goal chance for Derry while Quinn knocked over another “45”. McGrogan and Michael Conroy exchanged points from frees before the latter fisted the ball over the bar.

McGrogan got another free for Derry but their afternoon was summed up when they had substitute Oisin McWilliams straight red carded three minutes from time. Conroy added a third point since his introduction as Tyrone took the silverware in style.
