Tyrone champions Pomeroy are through to the Ulster Club Intermediate final after a hard fought but deserved win over Derry side Castledawson.

The Plunketts began brightly with early points from Chris Colhoun and Ryan Loughran but then lost midfielder Brendan Cunningham to injury before Loughran picked up a black card following a challenge just under the stand midway through the first half.

These losses to key personnel forced Pomeroy to reshape their team and for the remainder of the first half they struggled to cope. Castledawson moved 1-6 to 0-3 ahead with half time beckoning as team captain Niall Mc Nicholl, Aidan Keenan and Aidy Bradley caused all sorts of problems for the Pomeroy defence and put Hugh Pat Mc Geary and his colleagues onto the back foot.

However with the thirty minutes almost up the side managed by Adrian O’Donnell and Mark Harte were offered a lifeline when Chris Colhoun rifled to the net following a fine team move before Justin Mc Caffrey scored a superb point. These scores gave the Tyrone champions something to fight for as they found themselves only two down at the break despite having been outplayed for most of the opening half.

Pomeroy looked a different side after the break. Using the elements and their work rate to their best effect they chased down the Castledawson lead. Six unanswered points in a ten minute spell had the Plunketts three in front before they were rocked back on their heels when Aidan Keenan got on the end of a high ball into the square to punch to the net.

Once again the teams were tied but Pomeroy responded with great character to move three clear for the second time in the half. Points from John Loughran, Kieran Mc Geary and Frank Burns put them in position A only for two fine scores off the boot of Paddy Henry and Luke Doyle hauled them in once more.

However Pomeroy refused to panic as they moved the ball forward into the hands of sub Aidan Woods who sealed the win with a fine brace of scores to take the Tyrone champions to the Provincial Final on a final score of Pomeroy 1-16, Castledawson 2-11.
