Tyrone took to the field in Beragh for the final game in qualifying U 16 LGFA Ulster championship against an unbeaten Down side.

Having decided to play with the wind in the first half Tyrone were quick to get into their stride with Keeva Owens kicking a point from a free. This was followed by Erin Daly scoring from open play as Tyrone appeared to have come to terms with the tricky conditions.

Down broke up the field to fire to the net but the Tyrone response was a goal following great link up play between Heaney, Cocannon, and the Loughran girls with Therese firing to the net.

Tyrone’s press on the kickout was rewarded with D Coyle being fouled and Owens hitting a point from the resultant free. L McCullagh  was unlucky to see her thunderous shot rebounding off the bar.

Spurred on by this piece of luck Down went up field to fire a point from play. Tyrone’s McCullagh then fired over another fine point from play. Not to be outdone Isabella Grimes got on the scoresheet with a point from open play. Ellie Daly pointed from play as referee Siobhan Coyle blew the half time whistle.  Tyrone 1-06 Down 1-01

After the restart Tyrone broke up field with McGinn heading goalwards only to be fouled up stepped Owens to kick a point from the free. Down started the long ball game and got their reward with a goal. Excellent defence play from Heaney,Campbell, McCanny, Gilligan broke up numerous Down attacks ably supported by M Loughran and D Coyle who was pushing Tyrone forward at every opportunity. Owens was proving hard to stop with runs from midfield drawing fouls and scoring the resulting free. E McGinn then scored from open play as the young Red Hands were on top all over the field.

Owens scored another point from a free before Down’s long ball tactic paid off with one such effort finding the net. This seemed to encourage the Down forwards and the fired over three unanswered points from play.

Ellen McBride then scored a fine point from play to settle Tyrone. Tyrone then set up in the Down half scoring 2 further points with McGinn from play another free converted by Owens. Down threw caution to the wind and went for goals scoring a brace to leave them ahead by 1 deep into injury time. Super sub Cara McMoran went on a solo run before firing to the net and finally breaking the resilience of the Down defence.

From the kick out referee Siobhan Coyle blew the final whistle. Tyrone 3-12 Down 5-04
