Under-21 Final set for Brewster Park…
Thursday 07.04.2011

Tyrone will return to Brewster Park, Enniskillen, next Wednesday night for the 2011 Ulster Under-21 Football Championship Final following last night’s slender semi-final victory over Monaghan at the same venue. Tyrone’s opponents, Cavan, will actually be heading to Brewster Park for their third championship outing in a row after the Breffni side won their quarter-final and semi-final matches there.
The Red Hands will be seeking a first Ulster under-21 title since 2006 when Justin McMahon captained the county to victory over Derry at Ballybofey before they lost to Mayo at Breffni Park in extra time at the All-Ireland semi-final stage. That was Tyrone’s eleventh provincial under-21 title five years ago so they will be trying to make it a dozen on Wednesday night, with Cavan going for just their third success at this level.
The Tyrone under-21s will be in action for the fifth Wednesday night in a row, following those three epic battles with Down at Pairc Esler, Healy Park and the Athletic Grounds before last night’s win at Brewster Park. All their matches to date, with the exception of the second replay with Down, have been very close affairs and they could have gone either way. It’s a sign of Tyrone’s character that they have come through every one of those encounters unscathed and their four matches so far will surely have toughened them up for the meeting with Cavan.
Tyrone are of course blessed with great talent at this age group, the squad littered with All-Ireland minor winners from 2008 and 2010, but that doesn’t guarantee anything next Wednesday night. It has certainly been a memorable under-21 championship so far and Raymond Munroe’s side will be fancied by many to round off the provincial series with a victory over Cavan.
Meanwhile, the Tyrone minor footballers lost to Fermanagh in the Ulster league this week, while the county’s minor hurlers will be on duty this Saturday at 12 noon when they face Monaghan in the Ulster Minor Hurling League Division 2 decider at Healy Park. Below is the full list of this week’s provincial results and fixtures…
