Danske Bank Corn Colmcille Final

Our Lady’s Castleblaney 3-11 St.Joseph’s Donaghmore 3-9

There was heartbreak for St.Joseph’s Donaghmore in the Danske Bank Corn Colmcille final at Emyvale on Thursday afternoon when they lost out to an injury time goal from Our Lady’s Castleblaney.

The Tyrone lads held a two point lead deep into injury time when Castleblaney Captain Tommie Duffy blasted the ball to the roof of the net and moments later Max McGinity tagged on  appoint to ensure victory for the Monaghan school.

The winners enjoyed a great start to the contest as they raced into a 1-4 to 0-1 lead courtesy of points from Duffy, McGinity and Tadgh Hegarty coupled with a goal from the latter. Eoghan O’Neill responded with a major for St.Joseph’s but Castleblaney then got another goal through Charlie McQuillan. That left them 2-4 to 1-1 in front but they failed to score for the rest of the half. St.Joseph’s began to play their way into the game and sixty seconds after conceding that second goal they raised a green flag of their own through the lively Noah Grimes. Grimes added two points with midfielder John McKenna also on target to leave it all square at the interval 2-4 apiece.

Duffy and Grimes exchanged points at the beginning of the second period as did McGinity and McKenna before St.Joseph’s got their noses in front for the first time in the contest when Grimes finished brilliantly to the net again after good work from Leo Hughes.  Castleblaney though reacted and they drew level thanks to points from Darragh McMahon (2) and McGinity. Donaghmore hit back again with Grimes converting two frees and Joseph Corrigan fisting a point with Castleblaney’s  sole response coming from a Duffy free. The game was three minutes into injury time when Duffy banged in that winning goal for a result that was harsh on St.Joseph’s.
