Urney narrowly defeated Stewartstown this evening in a low scoring and error ridden Intermediate championship semi final at Healy Park 1-7 to 0-8 with Johnny Lafferty’s seventh minute goal proving to be the key score. Both sides spurned chances in the first half as the North Tyrone side reached the break 1-5 to 0-3 in front. Jonah, Johnny and Gary Lafferty were on target for the winners while the Harps first half scores came from Gareth Devlin, Paul Dillon and Cathal Devlin.
Stewartstown needed to make a good start to the second half but their first four attacks ended up sailing aimlessly wide of the posts. Indeed it took until the fortieth minute before they managed to record their first score of the second half following a thirty metre free from James Kelly. Points followed from Peter Armor, Gareth Devlin and Ryan Devlin but Fergal Mc Nulty and Stephen Lafferty got the vital scores for Urney that ensured they made it through to the final. It was a far from convincing win from the men in green and gold but they won’t worry about that as they look forward to a 20th of October clash with Eskra after the Emmetts accounted for Rock in the second semi final of the night.
Eskra produced their best display of the season to record a stunning 1-13 to 0-7 semi final win over Rock to seal their place in the championship final. The men in white and black stunned their opponents with a blistering first half display against the elements to reach the break 0-9 to 0-3 in front. All nine points came from play and had Eskra been even more ruthless they could have totally out of sight by half time. Scores from Shane Hackett, Peter Hughes, Eoin Mc Caffrey, Cormac Arkinson and Conor O’Hagan inside the opening quarter put Eskra in pole position and although Rock came more into the game in the second half they never seriously threatened the winners. Peter Hughes, Niall Mc Ginn and Joe Mc Carroll produced superb displays throughout the hour to make sure that Eskra qualified for their second successive Intermediate Championship final. They will go into that game as warm favourites and if they can reproduce the sort of passion and intensity that they showed this evening against Rock they will be a real handful for Urney.
