Old rivals Tyrone and Mayo have met several times in the last few years and they have always been very entertaining matches. Both teams are under new management with Tyrone led by Paul O’Grady while Mayo only confirmed their backroom team a few weeks ago. The Red Hands undoubtedly benefitted from the extra preparation time and Cara Little and Lara Devlin were quick to get the first scores on the board. Joint captains Una and Siobhan Donnelly combined to defend Mayo’s early attacks and Devlin and Aine Cunningham scored again before Mayo settled and Ava Dooley intercepted and Brona Joyce to get their first point of the game. Both teams hit a few wides from play, but Tyrone were clearly enjoying their game and new addition to the team Becky Santos hit the net just before half time.

Half time: Tyrone 1-9 Mayo 0-5

The visitors made a promising start to the second period when Cathy Greally converted a free but even as Mayo managed to keep a close eye on Devlin, Roisin McErlean and Little were able to take their chances with both frees and the former with hitting the net directly from the opposition puck out.

Mayo struck for several points from dead ball situations but Tyrone goalkeeper Eimear Colton proved difficult to beat and at the other end the pressure was such that the westerners conceded an own goal.

Tyrone will be very pleased with this start to the season and will hope to continue winning ways next Saturday when they are home to Wicklow.
