Ulster Under 17 Jim McGuigan Cup; Tyrone 1-11 Donegal 1-9

A powerful second half performance from Tyrone saw them commence their 2019 Ulster Under 17 Jim McGuigan Cup campaign with a narrow yet merited win over North West neighbours and big rivals Donegal at Páirc Mhic Sioghair Strabane on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Hand’s trailed by three points at half time with Mark Devlin firing in a fine goal in the fifth minute of the contest for Tyrone with Ronan McHugh, Shea Daly and a point from Mark Devlin leaving them trailing at the break 1-6 to 1-3. Donegal’s goal came from a Johnny McGroddy penalty on eleven minutes. The same player also added a brace of points as did Eoin Dowling and Senan Rooney.

Donegal got the opening two scores of the second half with goalkeeper Daithi Roberts from a forty-five metre kick and Johnny McGroddy from play both on target. Tyrone responded with Oran McGrath shot rattling off the Donegal crossbar but it went over for a point with substitutes Ethan Neill and Sean Connelly each adding a point from play shortly after being called into the fray.

Donegal goalkeeper Daithi Roberts edged his side back into a three points lead with a long range point from a free kick but Tyrone finished strongly hitting the last five points of the contest in the closing twelve minutes to deservedly win this keenly contested clash. Mark Devlin, Ruairi Campbell, Ronan McHugh, Michael Quinn and another substitute Luke Donnelly from a free kick ensuring that the Red Hand’s commenced their campaign with a merited victory.
