North Tyrone neighbours Strabane and Urney went head to head in a Division One play-off match which would see the losers relegated to Intermediate football for 2018.

With home advantage the Sigersons went into the game as slight favourites but from early in the match it was clear that Urney were up for the battle. Team captain Johnny Lafferty flicked the ball to the net five minutes into the game to give the Saint Columbas the perfect start. Strabane responded well to draw level with points from Michael Etherstone, Haydn Mc Namee and Brian Breslin and after Lafferty had put Urney in front again Strabane added points from Mc Namee and Warner Mullan to lead for the first time.

Urney however were beginning to dominate possession and with Ryan Henry and Fergal Mc Nulty in fine form they hit five points in a row to pull ahead by four. Lafferty again, Christopher Bogle (2), James Kelly and Ryan Henry with the all important scores.

Both sides added two points each in the remaining minutes of the half to reach the break with Urney leading 1-8 to 0-7.

The visitors got the second half off to a perfect start with a converted Johnny Lafferty penalty after two minutes. This score left Strabane with a mountain to climb and try as they might they just could not bridge the gap.

Chris Bogle landed his team’s third goal to put the game out of sight and although Mullan, Mark Devine and JP Gallagher managed to reduce the deficit they were powerless to prevent Strabane from falling to defeat and slipping out of senior football.

Urney will now face another North Tyrone derby clash this time against Aghyaran with the winner securing senior football for the 2018 season.

Final score: Urney 3-12, Strabane 0-15.
