Winning Start For Tyrone

Tyrone made a winning start to their McKenna Cup campaign when they emerged comfortable winners over Derry at Celtic Park on Thursday night. The Red Hands hit twenty points with fourteen of those coming from play on a night when they had an impressive eleven different scorers. David Mulgrew opened the scoring after taking a mark but by the 7th minute the hosts were in front thanks to efforts from Enda Lynn and Ryan Bell.
That was as good as it got for Derry however. A Darren McCurry free levelled matters before a “45” from keeper Niall Morgan edged the Red Hands in front. Gareth McKinless and Ben McDonnell exchanged points before Morgan landed another placed ball and Mulgrew hit a great score from play after collecting a superb pass from man of the match Kyle Coney. Lynn and McCurry both registered for their respective sides before Derry centre half back Eamon McGill blasted over. Tyrone though were always able to stay in front with McCurry hitting an outstanding point with the outside of his boot and Ruairi Sludden knocking over a free, Bell and Ciaran McFaul on target for Derry to leave it 0-9 to 0-7 at the break.
Derry Captain Emmett Bradley reduced the deficit to the minimum on the restart but then Tyrone went through the gears. McCurry [2], Cathal McShane, Niall Sludden [2], Conan Grugan and Coney all registered as the winners made it seven scores in a row. A Bell free stopped the rot for Derry but it was Tyrone who continued to dominate proceedings. Wing back McDonnell got his second score and while Bradley and Ben McCarron replied for Derry it was Tyrone who closed the game out with scores from substitute duo Ronan O’Neill and Darragh Canavan coupled with another from McShane as it finished 0-20 to 0-11.
