Lorcan McBride is the new world under-11 handball champion after clinching the title yesterday with an impressive win over Jakub Szkup, his sixth game in a gruelling competition. He had produced a string of brilliant performances to reach the decider and polished off the final in great style.
Ciaran Curran, Caolan Daly and Aoife Kelly also took part in world singles finals yesterday but things didn’t go their way on the day.
Ciaran sustained a bad shoulder injury at the start of his tiebreaker in the world over 35 singles final and was helpless as Dominic Lynch took the title.
Caolan had recorded a couple of superb wins over CJ Fitzpatrick and Stephen Cooney to reach the world under-23 final but didn’t play to his full potential in the final and lost to Clare’s Diarmaid Nash.
Aoife was very unlucky in the opening game of her under-15 singles final as she lost 15-14 after leading Niamh Coleman 14-13 and the Armagh girl grew in confidence, taking the second game 15-8.
It was a wonderful achievement for all of the Tyrone players to reach yesterday’s finals, and one of the biggest achievements of all so far has been Barry Devlin’s progress to the mens b singles decider which took place today.
Barry set out in one of the toughest competitions of all early in the week and after five tough encounters he played his world mens b final this afternoon, eventually going down to Tadgh Carroll.
The 40×20 singles finals are all wrapped up and the championships have been a big success so far for Tyrone players, with five world final places claimed.
There are still high hopes for Tyrone players in a number of doubles competitions and one wall championships over the next few days.
Good luck to all the Tyrone players still involved…
