CMU14Carrickmore’s fine run in youth football this year continued on Saturday afternoon with a hard fought 3-14 to 3-9 over an excellent Strabane side at Clanabogan.  Played in bright sunshine on a superb surface both teams served up a game worthy of the occasion. Carrickmore came into the game buoyed by their minor team’s title win on Friday night and opened strongly.

The action switched from one goal mouth to the other as both teams created early chances but it was Carrickmore’s greater accuracy in the opening period that saw them move into a 1-7 to 0-2 lead after twenty minutes.

The quality of football being served up by the two teams meant the large crowd was treated to one of the best youth finals in years.  Daniel Fullerton bagged 2-6 for his team while Conor Cuddy, Lorcan Mc Garrity and Cahir Munroe also contributed vital scores especially late in the game when the tie was in the balance. Sigerson’s Conor Williamson, Anthony Crossan and Pol Mc Colgan each found the net for their side but the Strabane lads will look back on this one with regret at the number of goal chances they failed to convert especially in the opening half.

In an excellent team display Aran Mc Grath, Oisin Mc Gillion, Liam Mc Elhinney, Eoin Barkley and Ronan Mc Ginley had superb games for the Sigersons and did not deserve to be on the losing side.  The teams were tied for long periods in the second half and with less than three minutes of a pulsating game remaining the score line read Carrickmore 2-12, Strabane 3-9.

The tie seemed destined to go to extra time before a late scoring blitz from the winners saw them add 1-2 without reply to take the title as it finished 3-14 to 3-9 for the boys from Carrickmore.
