St.Patrick’s Academy Dungannon 1-9 St.Mary’s Magherafelt 4-9

The Academy went into this encounter at Ballinderry on Monday evening knowing that a point would secure top spot in their section and a place in the quarter finals of the MacRory Cup but they came up against a fired up St.Marys Magherafelt side who were worthy winners.

The holders got off to a brilliant start with an outstanding goal in the third minute from half forward Richard Drain and they never looked back. Academy corner forward Theo Lowe responded with two well taken points but it was to be a game that the Tyrone school would always trail in. Joshua Cassidy grabbed Magherafelt’s second goal and while Sean Hughes responded with a couple of points it was obvious that the Dungannon lads were in trouble. Cassidy then bagged his second goal of the game and while Dungannon responded with points from Hughes and defender Paul Duffin they still trailed 3-4 to 0-7 at the break.

The second half was only five minutes old when Magherafelt effectively ended the game as a contest when half back James Sargent scored their fourth goal of the game. Eamon Young, Drain, Conall Higgins and Conhuir Johnston all tagged on points for the winners and while Liam Traynor got an Academy goal late on it was only a consolation score.
