It has not been a good start to this year’s Mac Rory Cup campaign for both the Tyrone schools with Dungannon, like Omagh yesterday also losing their opening fixture. They took on St Michael’s Enniskillen today in a game that was switched from Tempo to Trillick but fell to a 1-14 to 2-9 defeat in a game that they should have won comfortably. The Academy began the game well and after a Conor Mallon point to open the scoring Sean Molloy hit the net to put them in the driving seat. At half time they led 1-04 to 0-05 with Rock player Aidan Mc Garrity on target from a couple of frees. They also dominated the opening stages of the second half with points from Deasan Quinn and Gavin O’Gorman before Diarmuid Carroll hit the net for a second Academy goal.
The Dungannon lads were completely on top at this stage but took their foot off the pedal and allowed Enniskillen in for 1-05 without reply and although they rallied late in the game with points from Stefan Lavery and Colm Corrigan they failed to close the gap sufficiently. Next up for the Academy is St Macartans Monaghan, a game which coach Ciaran Gourley will be hoping his players can get their first two points of the league.
