The news that Sean Cavanagh had picked up a serious shoulder injury in a club match on Sunday was met with a sense of disbelief and bewilderment by Tyrone supporters. I dare not write what the response was from a very prominent GAA figure who I spoke with early on Sunday evening after the news broke. Suffice to say his reaction reflected the disappointment of all Tyrone followers even though it was punctuated by the use of one or two expletives.
Mickey Harte had already lost two of his brightest forward talents for the year and this was hardly the news he had been hoping for. Big Sean had managed to overcome an earlier shoulder injury and had worked his way back to full fitness ahead of schedule. With a young and developing team emerging his experience would have been vital to its chances of success. At this stage there is no indication of how serious the injury is but it would be nothing short of a minor miracle if he was to play any part in the Ulster Championship this year.
The injury is a huge blow to the player and a massive loss to his club and county. His absence will certainly affect Tyrone’s hopes of championship success. We wish him a speedy recovery and a quick return to full health.
