Beragh Red Knights GAA & Brackey Handball Club is holding its inaugural cycle on the weekend of Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th June 2012. The event, appropriately named the “Cooley2Cooley” Cycle, which is a 140 mile round trip, was launched on Monday evening by Tyrone County stars Conor Gormley & Peter Harte and Tyrone County Chairman Ciaran McLaughlin.

This fundraising event is set to raise much needed funds for the clubs. The money raised will be used to refurbish its premises following its flooding in recent storms, the second in as many years, also a donation being made to a local cancer charity. The social aspect of this event will be important, enhancing the camaraderie within the community, so that collectively, the people of Beragh can restore their sports pavilion.

It will be a great opportunity for members and non-members, people of Beragh and beyond, to enjoy the physical activity of cycling to the foot of the beautiful Cooley Mountains in Co. Louth. The local GAA club, Cooley Kickhams, will kindly host a social evening for all cyclists and guests. They will also provide overnight accommodation for the weary travellers! All cyclists will return to the Beragh club premises in the townland of Cooley, the following day.

Registration night for entrants to collect their sponsorship card, will be held in the Beragh GAA Clubrooms, on Friday 9th March @ 8pm. Entry numbers are limited so don’t be late!

Speaking at the launch event, Conor Gormley said “I am delighted to be involved in the launch of this cycling event. It should prove to be an enjoyable challenge for all participating.”

The Club chairman, Hugh McNamee stated, “There is already a great buzz of excitement amongst the local community. Experienced cyclists and novices alike are out training on the roads, gearing up for the big event, which we are promoting as a leisure cycle, as opposed to a race. I call on all members of the community to get involved in whatever way they can, to support this worthwhile event for both club & charity.”

Ciaran Mc Laughlin, the County Chairman, voiced his support by saying, “This should prove to be a successful event. The combination of physical activity, community team spirit and crucial fundraising should result in a positive and memorable experience for all involved.”

Please register your interest in taking part in the event by collecting your sponsorship form on Friday 9th March; registration fee is £20 for the event and this includes a limited edition event jersey. Date for return of sponsorship forms TBC. You must be over 18 yrs of age to participate. Keep up to date with progress on Facebook “Cooley2Cooley Cycle”.
