Drumquin are through to the first round proper of the LCC Junior Championship after a convincing 2-12 to 1-9 win over Fintona at Clanabogan on Wednesday night.

Fintona opened the scoring after two minutes with a free from Peter Mc Glinn but Drumquin hit 1-2 without reply courtesy of a Padraic Rodgers point and 1-1 from Sean Mc Donagh to lead 1-2 to 0-1 after fourteen minutes. Goalscorer Mc Donagh would go on to finish top scorer on the night with a personal tally of 2-5 after a very accomplished display.

Fintona were struggling to get into the game but they enjoyed some good fortune late in the first half when a speculative effort from Cathal Starrs spun off the hand of the Drumquin goal keeper and finished in the net. Drumquin now found themselves in a game and Starrs added four points to put his team two in front.

The Wolfe Tones responded regained their composure and Sean Mc Donagh, Frankie Mc Alynn and Paudric Rodgers all pointed to tie the game 1-5 apiece at the break.

The Pearses started the second half strongly with early scores from Mark Mc Glinn and Aidan Donnelly but two Sean Mc Donagh points and a fine score from Cormac Rodgers had Drumquin in front again. Substitute Ryan Mc Callion and Cathal Starrs swapped points before another point from Mc Donagh and a converted penalty from the same player in the 52nd minute put the game beyond Fintona’s reach as the gap grew to five points with six minutes remaining.

Peter Mc Glinn narrowed the gap to four points and Mark Mc Glinn rattled the crossbar with a fantastic effort but Drumquin saw out the game with points from Matty Mc Dermott and Ryan Mc Callion to make it through to a first round clash with Killyman.

Scorers: Drumquin, Sean Mc Donagh 2-5, Padraic Rodgers 0-2, Frankie Mc Alynn 0-1, Cormac Rodgers 0-1, Ryan Mc Callion 0-2, Matty Mc Dermott 0-1

Fintona: Peter Mc Glinn 0-2, Cathal Starrs 1-5, Mark Mc Glinn 0-1, Aidan Donnelly 0-1.
